In the footsteps of ancient Rome
San Giovanni is home to the magnificent Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, a site steeped in history and spirituality. Its lively streets are filled with local markets, artisan shops, and authentic Roman eateries. You must start from San Giovanni in Laterano to rediscover all the charm of ancient Rome: this is the first of the four papal basilicas and the oldest and most important basilica in the West. Right in front of the Basilica you will find the Scala Santa: according to the Catholic faith it is the ladder Jesus climbed to reach the room where he would undergo Pontius’ interrogation Pilate in Jerusalem – before the crucifixion. From inside the basilica you can also access the cloister, of rare beauty, richly decorated with marble inlays. The itinerary then includes the park Carlo Felice, the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, the Aurelian walls, the Casilino bridge to get to the walks that run along Via Casilina Vecchia and Via del Mandrione. The route ends with Villa Lais, a public park in the Tuscolano district

Enjoy the beauty of Rome outdoors in the Caffarella Park, one of the largest green areas in Rome, within which you will find the Nymphaeum of Egeria, an archaeological site dating back to the second century AD. from which a source of water flows. Then head to Cartiera Latina – Appia Antica Park (the Caffarella park is part of the Appia Park Ancient). The former Cartiera Latina, among the few surviving industrial plants in the city, is unique in its kind due to its strategic position close to the Aurelian walls. Today it is a multifunctional complex and is equipped with an equipped green space which houses an educational garden, called Hortus Urbis. Also on the Appia Antica you will find the catacombs of San Callisto, dating back to the first centuries of Christianity: they are among the largest and most important in Rome
